Planing sloyd – prototype

(1 customer review)

£65.00

One of our first prototypes of a new sloyd knife that we are developing. It is a little thicker steel than most sloyds on the market at 3.5mm, and with a 25 degree grind angle that gives it a very wide flat bevel. We find this makes it superb for creating long smooth planing cuts, something that many carvers struggle with.

Description

One of our first prototypes of a new sloyd knife that we are developing. It is a little thicker steel than most sloyds on the market at 3.5mm, and with a 25 degree grind angle that gives it a very wide flat bevel. We find this makes it superb for creating long smooth planing cuts, something that many carvers struggle with. The back is beautifully rounded and polished which people who use the thumb push cut a lot will love. This batch are on some “slight second” handles, and are in some “slight second” sheaths to keep them safe in the post though the defects are hardly visible.

The steel is the same high alloy steel we use for our hook knives with 1.55% carbon, 12% chrome along with molybdenum and vanadium, it goes through the same rigorous professional heat treat process followed by cryogenic treatment. It should hold an edge for a very long time.

Blade length: 65mm / 2.5″

Handle length: 140mm / 5.5″

A different feel to the more traditional Scando grind sloyd knife, a very strong and rigid blade, but feels really good after a few minutes use! And not just for long planing cuts, seems to work well in tight spaces, like the transitions from bowl to handle on spoons, just choke-up on the blade (easy, because it’s such a short blade) and use the fine tip! Becoming a favourite tool!
