Description
After a break of 30 years Sheffield is making axes again and they are better than ever before.
The head is forged from 100Cr6 bearing steel hardened and tempered to Rc58. It’s ground on one of the few last traditional water cooled grindstones still working and honed to a razor edge you can literally shave with.
The handle is made from locally sourced ash and held in place with an oak wedge cut from an old whisky barrel. It comes with a sheath either made from top quality full grain leather (our current stock is the last that was made at Clayton’s tannery at Chesterfield) or a vegan option made from recycled fire hose.

The axe was designed specifically for fine sculptural work, it excels at carving wooden spoons but it’s equally at home splitting kindling for a pizza oven, hewing boat timbers or carving joints for log cabins, or you could just hang it on the wall and admire it as a piece of art. These axes come with a lifetime guarantee though we make them with the intention of them lasting much longer than one lifetime.

Goddam, what a spectacular axe this is. It works just as well for carving as it does for splitting kindling, making it a fantastic camping and bushcraft axe. It’s perfectly weighted in the hand and the cutting power has to be seen to be believed. I think this may be the best axe I’ve ever owned, and it feels like it will last a lifetime. Outstanding.

The Sheffield axe is beautiful, the attention to detail in the design is evident right from opening the box. The pleasing aesthetics are matched by the way the axe naturally feels in your grip with the handle tapering out subtly. Having a Robin Wood carving axe already, it feels familiar, but the Sheffield has a distinct air of evolution, suggesting a lot of thought has gone into each aspect, weight wise it’s hard to tell them apart… you’re going to need scales.
It’s Sharp! Yes, you can shave with it, although a little awkward for that task. You can split down a billet quickly and confidently removing a lot of material with ease. Choke up the head and you can move onto detailed spoon work with equal confidence. The blade size, shape and grind allow for versatility and wide range of techniques. There is plenty of room between the handle and beard for your fingers yet perfect balance for delicate work.
I opted for the fire hose sheath, which is an effective and wonderful new use for the material. To sum it up, the Sheffield axe oozes quality and inspires confidence. I really can’t see anyone being disappointed, if you are already using a Wood Tools axe you are sure to be thrilled, the transition to using the Sheffield was seamless. Ordering was easy and exceptional service from the Wood Tools team ensuring the Axe reached me quickly and safely.

This axe is truly beautiful. I followed Robin’s posts eagerly waiting for it to become available. I made a couple of spoon blanks this weekend and can honestly say that it is as pleasing to use as it is to look at.
On top of that it’s British craftsmanship through and through. What’s not to like.
Thankyou Robin and the team at Wood Tools.
