The Robin Wood Carving Axe

A razor sharp axe that will do anything from felling small trees to splitting firewood, where it really excels is as a carving axe.

The weight of the head is 550g and the total weight around 720g (1lb 11oz), handle length is 12.5″ (31cm). This is a great mid-weight carving axe that most people will use easily without getting tired, yet still heavy enough to remove wood quickly.

A sharp axe will only stay sharp if the edge is protected, we offer a great leather sheath for the job.

A razor sharp axe that will do anything from felling small trees to splitting firewood, where it really excels is as a carving axe.

For many years there has not been a good carving axe available that came sharp and ready to use for less than £100. This axe changes things. The axe heads are drop forged abroad then ground by Brian Alcock, the last professional grinder in Sheffield, before being honed to a fine edge in our own workshop in Sheffield. We have the hickory axe handles made in the UK to our design. They have a knurled finish for grip and are treated with linseed oil. They also make a great axe for kindling splitting, bushcraft or camp use.

The weight of the head is 550g and the total weight around 720g (1lb 9oz), handle length is 12.5″ (31cm). This is a good mid-weight carving axe that most people will use easily without getting tired, yet still heavy enough to remove wood quickly.

A sharp axe will only stay sharp if the edge is protected, we offer a great leather sheath for the job.

Here is a short film we made of Brian grinding the axes

The carving axes come sharp and ready to use but eventually you will need to sharpen it yourself. This video shows the method we use.

This video shows the axe compared to two commonly used axes by Gransfors Bruks and also shows it in use carving a spoon blank. NB we have slightly changed the handle design since this film was made. The axes have proved extremely popular with many folk preferring them to much more expensive axes, have a look at some of the comments below.

Due to the nature of the natural materials we use, handle colours & patterns will vary, as will sheath colours & textures. Sheath not included – buy the axe from this page to get the sheath at a discounted price.

A fine wee chopper! I’ve been using this axe on and off for a few months now and really like the overall design and balance. The size is well judged, feeling friendly and easy to use, but still with real clout for rough carving quickly. The long curved edge and the counterbalance effect of the chunky handle allow me to pivot at the wrist for relaxed, accurate rounded slicing motions during finer carving. The overall effect is a tool that’s beginning to feel like an extension of my arm!

I received my axe today and couldn’t be more pleased. I like to use either hand when chopping, and it’s size and balance is just what I was looking for. Being a total ‘axe-junkie’, your axe rates right up there with the best of them.
    Thanks, Randy

I started out buying a cheap hatchet from Lowes in the US. It worked fine I thought until I received my Robin wood carvers axe! MAN! This thing is awesome! It is so light that it makes accuracy problems flutter away. I highly recommend this product!

What can I say but echo the above comments and leave 5 stars behind?! Unbelievably fast delivery (I’d swear Robin had driven from Derbyshire to Dorset on receipt of the order, it was that quick!), and a cracking tool. Of the three carving axes I own, this is my favourite. The quality of the finish on the blade surpasses anything available from the other quality producers. An exceptional tool at a great price. Buy it.

There are very few real bargains in life but this is one of them. Excellent product, excellent price and excellent shipping. This axe came out of the box sharp enough to cut the hairs off my fore arm. As a bonus the axe arrived the next day great service. This axe has quickly became my favourite axe to use when bushcrafting and carving. It will do all of the jobs I ask of it and more. It is now attached to my rucksack permanently. As a result this axe will be also used on overland expeditions. A leather sheath would be great just to finish it off.

Robin definitely imagined and produced a Fantastic Axe! Perfect size, weight, shape, steel, and wood handle. I have been carving spoons, bowls, and other wood adventures long enough to buy and use a large variety of big name axes which come with big name price tags, unlike this very affordable axe R.B makes! Not only does Robins’s axe far exceed my expectations, but it quickly claimed its Demanding, Number One, “Go To” Axe Position, in my tool arsenal!!

next day delivery is always a bonus . arrived well packed and is very very sharp right out the box. very happy. not 100% sold on the handle design (the texture of it) but i’ll see how it goes. very happy with it though

Received the axe 4 days ago and have used it constantly and I must say it is beyond excellent. Super sharp right out the box this little beauty will quickly become my go to axe for bushcraft and carving. The forging is first class and the grind and the shape of the edge allows for much better cutting capability of both green and hardwoods and also for precision cutting for example feather sticks and is better than some dedicated knives for this task. The shape of the handle as well as alignment, fit and finish are also excellent. I would urge anyone contemplating buying this axe to not hang about for they will sell like hot cakes. Excellent value for money and in my estimation better than the Gransfors Bruks wildlife hatchet which is twice the price.

Just as the description says, a great wee axe, I didnt want to spend too much money on a axe until my sharpening skills are good enough but now I wont need to because this axe is good enough, a real bargain for once.

I used the gransfors carving axe as my main axe, but the weight can be a little taxing at times. The price of this axe made me a little weary, but after using it, I would recommend this axe to anyone. Comes out of the box sharp and is a perfect all around weight. I absolutely love it. After only using it a few times, I know that it will soon be my new favorite tool. Bottom line – Perfect axe for an even more perfect price.

Bought this as a small, light alternative to my other axes that I’d be comfortable taking out of the workshop and using and abusing carving in the field. However, it’s quickly become my go to axe. The dimensions are spot on and it just feels right in the hand.
