A spoon knife sheath or ‘hook knife hat’ is perfect for keeping you sharp spoon knife safe. A razor sharp edge is also a very fragile edge, if it touches any other metal it will need re-sharpening which takes time and skill. Far easier and safer to keep it in a sheath whenever you put it down.
Spoon knives are difficult things to make good sheaths for especially ones that are quick and easy to pop the knife in and out. These sheaths are made from a special leather made for us by Clayton’s of Chesterfield. It is thick and super tough but also soft and flexible. This allows it to stretch and grip the tool handle securely. A gentle push with the thumb on the edge of the seam unsheathes the tool safely.
We normally dye the cut edge brown to match but I like to colour my seams bright red or blue with a felt pen so I can tell left from right knives. If you want an un-dyed seam make a note in the comments.
